What is Breast Augmentation?

A breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure with the goal of adding volume to the breasts for a more youthful, full appearance. The additional volume comes from placing an implant behind your natural breast tissue or chest muscle. The implants are filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone-gel, both of which are FDA approved devices. Dr. Edds offers both saline and silicone implants. Silicone-gel implants are FDA approved for cosmetic use in women age 22 years and up. (See Silicone Breast Implants Page)

These procedures are performed in our outpatient setting with a certified anesthesia provider administering anesthesia. Breast augmentation is a totally pain-free procedure, which typically takes no more than an hour. The incision is about 1 inch long and hidden in the breast crease or along the areola border. Recovery is usually no more than a few days, with return to reasonably normal activity in one week.

Dr. Edds offers an artistic approach to cosmetic breast procedures and is skilled in creating a more full, natural, youthful appearing breast. Dr. Edds also specializes in the latest techniques for breast lifting with or without tissue reduction with natural-looking results and minimal scarring.

More Information about Breast Implants

Breast enlargement, or augmentation mammoplasty, enhances the body contour of a woman who is unhappy with her breast size. It may also be used to correct volume loss after pregnancy or to help balance size asymmetry as well as a reconstructive technique following other breast surgery. The operation is carried out on an outpatient basis under anesthesia. An implant (prothesis) may be placed through an incision around the nipple or just above the breast fold. Implants may be placed either above or below the muscle of the chest wall. The procedure generally lasts about one hour.

While breast augmentation will enlarge the breasts, and there can be some improvement in asymmetrical breasts, some asymmetries will be improved but will not be completely corrected. A slight difference in the size or shape of the two breasts is considered normal and should not be a cause for concern. If breast size or nipple position asymmetries are severe, additional procedures to further improve symmetry may be necessary.

Saline vs Silicone Breast Implants: Which Breast Implant Type is Best for Me?

Silicone Gel Breast Implants

If it is important to you that your breast implants feel natural, then you will want to consider silicone gel breast implants. What many women really appreciate about gel breast implants is that they feature a highly unique cohesive gel filling. The gel is neither a liquid or even a semi-liquid like gel implants of the past. Instead, today’s cohesive gel holds together in a uniform manner so it doesn’t leak even if the shell ruptures, and it retains a natural give that resembles your own breast tissue.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline-filled breast implants are filled with saltwater solution that is similar to the fluid that makes up most of the human body. They have a firmer feel than gel, and their fill volume can be adjusted by your surgeon during your procedure. Since saline implants are inserted empty before they are filled, they can be placed in your chest through a slightly smaller incision.

You and your cosmetic surgeon now have more breast implant choices than ever. Be sure to discuss your desires, expectations, preferences, and express any concerns you may have with your surgeon so that together you can determine the best breast implant type for you.

Breast Augmentation Incision Sites

Allowing for patient’s personal preference for incision sites, Dr. Edds offers a variety of incision sites for the breast augmentation procedure. The incision placement decision is determined in the consultation with Dr. Edds and is based on your anatomy, your desired outcome and the size and shape of the breast implants. At Edds Cosmetic Surgery, we offer inframammary breast augmentation (just above the breast crease), and peri-areolar breast augmentation (edge of the nipple incision) The advantages and disadvantages of these incisions and each patient’s case will be fully discussed during the consultation.

Breast Cancer & Mammograms

Breast cancer is a significant issue in women’s healthcare and we take it very seriously. Without added risk factors, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. Those odds are even greater in patients with a “primary relative” (mother or sister) with a history of breast cancer. In addition, other factors may increase the chances of developing breast cancer. We recommend mammograms on all women 40 and older in absence of known additional risk factors, and require them prior to cosmetic breast surgery.
